On August 27th, 1946, President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam’s Government issued the decree No.172 regading the issue of the first postage stampset of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

On August 27th, 1946, marking the first annivesary of the August Revolution and the Independent Day, Mr. Huỳnh Thúc Kháng signed the decree No.172 of the President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam’s Government regading the issue of the first postage stampset of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Upon this decree, the Postal Administration of Vietnam was permitted to print and issue this stampset.

The first stampset of the independent Vietnam

This stampset was designed by artist Nguyễn Sáng featuring the tittle “Việt Nam Dân chủ Cộng hòa” (the Democratic Republic of Vietnam) and the president Hồ Chí Minh’s portrait, consisting 5 values of the same design with different colours and denominations. Among these denominations, there were 2 stamps with extra-tax for national salvation. This is the first postage stampset which bears the official name of Vietnam.
